About This Rug |
||
|
Turkomans are generally accepted as having
inherited the oldest pile-weaving tradition still in existence. Turkomans
today inhabit Iran, Turkmenistan, and northwestern Afghanistan. The essential characteristics and overall
appearance of Turkoman rugs have hardly changed for centuries. They are
almost always red and their designs are usually based on a repeating “gul”
motif. “Gul” is the Persian word for “flower”, and it is a design element so
ancient that no one can say for sure where it came from or what it originally
symbolized. Each Turkoman tribe uses
its own various versions of the gul. |
